Most people associate semaglutide with weekly injections — but there’s a pill version called Rybelsus. If needles are a dealbreaker for you, or if you’re simply curious whether the oral form works as well as the injectable, here’s everything you need to know.
What Is Rybelsus?
Rybelsus is an oral tablet form of semaglutide, taken once daily. It’s manufactured by Novo Nordisk — the same company that makes Ozempic and Wegovy — and contains the identical active ingredient. It’s FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes management, not specifically for weight loss.
Doses available: 3 mg (starting dose), 7 mg, and 14 mg tablets.

Why Is Oral Semaglutide Less Effective?
Semaglutide is a large peptide molecule that would normally be destroyed by stomach acid before reaching the bloodstream. Rybelsus solves this by co-formulating semaglutide with a compound called SNAC (sodium N-[8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl) aminocaprylate]), which temporarily raises the local pH of the stomach wall and allows the drug to be absorbed through it.
The catch: this mechanism only works in a very specific, empty-stomach environment. Bioavailability is around 1% — meaning only 1% of the oral dose actually reaches your bloodstream. This is why Rybelsus requires 14 mg daily to achieve effects comparable to much lower weekly injectable doses. And even then, the injectable forms are more potent.
